Why Take Formal Swimming Lessons?

According to the National Drowning Prevention Alliance, drowning is the leading cause of unintentional injury related death for children ages 1-4 in the United States. However, formal swimming lessons reduce the risk of drowning by 88% for children age 1-4.

This statistic alone gives us great purpose for the work we get to do with kids in the Waco area. Our goal is for families to enjoy the water. We want parents to have peace of mind when their child is in or simply around the water, and we want kids to feel confident in the water and be able to play and have fun with friends, while being safe.

There’s no way to make your child “drown proof,” but formal swimming lessons are one layer of protection that can create a safe environment for your family to enjoy the water, whether that’s a backyard pool, the local water park, a lake or river.

The NDPA recommends that swimming lessons continue beyond one season so that kids can learn water competency and maintain and build their skills as swimmers. At Swim Kids Waco, we offer courses for babies 6 months old through about 12 years old (whether your older child is a beginner OR ready for the Jr Swim Team).

At each level, water safety is incorporated in your child’s swim session. We teach parents of littles about boundaries and getting permission before entering a pool. Once kids start in a Level 1 class, we have a Safety Day toward the end of the session. Students jump in with their clothes on and practice floating and getting to the side of the pool. We also practice what to do if you see someone else fall in a pool.

Water safety is one of our top priorities at Swim Kids Waco as we fulfill our mission to equip families for a lifetime of fun and safety in the water. You can get your child started in swimming lessons this week! Click here to register for Spring indoor swimming lessons.

Summer registration opens February 28, 2024 at 10am on the parent portal for current and previously enrolled families. New families can register on the website March 1, 2024 at 10am.
